Magic Johnson Premieres “The Announcement”
When Earvin “Magic” Johnson took to the podium to announce his retirement from professional basketball over 20 years ago, the world was stunned. An athlete who was at the prime of his career and who seemed almost invincible at the the time had contracted the HIV virus and now had to switch his attention on something greater than basketball.

Much time has passed since November 7, 1991 but people are still wondering how those close to Magic were affected by the dramatic news. Director Nelson George and ESPNĀ Films proudly present “The Announcement,” a documentary that takes an inside look at the moments leading up to the big news. Friends and family of Magic were present at the red carpet premiere of Regal Cinemas at LA Live to celebrate the film and joyous moment.
“I think now was the right time because nobody thought i’d be here 20 years,” said Johnson. “I had a positive attitude number one, and then I had a great support system; my wife, my mom, dad, brothers and sisters, close friends and Laker family as well,” continued the NBA legend.
For many members close to the film, the goal was reiterated throughout the night, and that was too use this as an outlet to educate others and bring awareness to the disease and help prevention.
